National Security

Ron Johnson is working to keep local communities safe by pushing real solutions to address Islamic terrorism and other threats to our national security. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, he’s addressing the root causes of our security concerns and taking on Washington dysfunction to get results.

Supporting a Strong Military: Since he was elected by the people of Wisconsin, Ron has voted for every National Defense Authorization Act – a crucial piece of legislation that guides our military strategy and gives our troops the resources they need to defeat our enemies.

Destroying ISIS: Ron led in calling for a comprehensive strategy to destroy ISIS, including the United States assembling a coalition of international allies – similar to the successful strategy of President George H.W. Bush in the first Gulf War – to invade ISIS territory.

Supporting Terrorist Surveillance: Ron supports having a strong intelligence-gathering capability to make sure law enforcement and our military have the tools they need to help prevent attacks – including those by homegrown and foreign lone wolf terrorists who act alone. He also supports keeping Guantanamo Bay open to help detain and question the worst terrorists we capture.

Keeping Terrorists Out: To address foreign threats as opposed to homegrown terrorism, Ron helped pass a law through Congress to reform our visa waiver program, introduced the leading proposal to make sure Syrian refugees are fully vetted, and is working to secure the border.

Fighting the Iran Deal: Ron not only voted against the Iran deal – he fought for it to be considered as a U.S. treaty and argued it had not undergone a legally required congressional review. Ron believes the deal fails to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and that it’s unwise to inject billions of dollars into the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism.

Winning the Cyber War Against Terrorism: Ron helped pass legislation to deal with the threat of cyber-attacks, and used his committee to examine how ISIS uses social media to encourage terrorist activity all across the globe.

Trusting Our Troops: Ron is pushing for legislation to end a ban on military service members carrying firearms on military installations so they can protect themselves against attacks like the one we saw in Chattanooga, Tenn.
