U.S. Senator Ron Johnson said he’s ready to sponsor a bill that would remove judicial protections for the gray wolf in the Western Great Lakes. The Wisconsin Republican said his measure would coincide with another bill introduced last month by Rep. Reid Ribble that would remove wolves in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan from the Endangered Species List.

In December, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the Fish and Wildlife Service should not have removed federal protections for wolves in Wisconsin and eight other Great Lakes states, which led to several wolf hunting seasons in many of those states. He then immediately placed the animal under protections first established in the late-1970s.

Johnson and Ribble say their legislation would reinstate two decisions by the agency to delist the gray wolf and allow states to continue their successful population management plans.
